Resumen
Purpose: This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of three different photoactivation methods on the polymerization shrinkage stress of a resin composite using different resin liners. Materials and Methods: Three photoactivation methods using a quartz-tungsten-halogen light were evaluated: continuous light, soft start, and intermittent light. Three lining groups were tested: one or three coats of adhesive, and flowable composite. The stress was measured using a universal testing machine. After the stress measurement, Knoop hardness numbers (KHNs) were evaluated to verify indirectly the degree of conversion of the composite using the three photoactivation methods. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey's test (p < .05). Results: Intermittent light was always associated with statistically lower stress values when compared with continuous light. Statistical differences were not observed when continuous light and soft start were compared. The use of a flowable composite liner significantly reduced the stress generation when compared with the use of one adhesive coat. The three adhesive coats groups showed intermediate stress values. The hardness test showed no statistical difference between that achieved with continuous light and soft start. These two methods showed statistically higher KHNs when compared with results with intermittent light. ©2006 BC Decker Inc. 18 1 29 36 Cunha, L.G., Sinhoreti, M.A.C., Consani, S., Sobrinho, L.C., Effect of different photo-activation methods on the polymerization depth of a light-activated composite (2003) Oper Dent, 28, pp. 155-159 Sakaguchi, R.L., Wiltbank, B.D., Murchison, C.F., Contraction force rate of polymer composites is linearly correlated with irradiance (2004) Dent Mater, 20, pp. 402-407 Unterbrink, G.L., Liebenberg, W.H., Flowable composites as "filled adhesives": Literature review and clinical recommendations (1999) Quintessence Int, 30, pp. 249-257 Feilzer, A.J., Doren, L.H., De Gee, A.J., Davidson, C.L., Influence of light intensity on polymerization shrinkage and integrity of restoration-cavity interface (1995) Eur J Oral Sci, 103, pp. 322-326 Uno, S., Asmussen, E., Marginal adaptation of restorative resin polymerized at reduced rate (1991) Scand J Dent Res, 99, pp. 440-444 Montes, M.A., Goes, M.F., Cunha, M.R., Soares, A.B., A morphological and tensile bond strength evaluation of an unfilled adhesive with low-viscosity composites and a filled adhesive in one and two coats (2001) J Dent, 29, pp. 435-441 Frankenberger, R., Lopes, M., Perdigão, J., The use of flowable composite as filled adhesives (2002) Dent Mater, 18, pp. 227-238 Rueggeberg, F.A., Caughman, W.F., Curtis Jr., J.W., Effect of light intensity and exposure duration on cure of resin composite (1994) Oper Dent, 19, pp. 26-32 Silikas, N., Eliades, G., Watts, D.C., Light intensity effects on resin-composite degree of conversion and shrinkage strain (2000) Dent Mater, 16, pp. 292-296 Obici, A.C., Sinhoreti, M.A.C., De Goes, M.F., Effect of the photo-activation method on polymerization shrinkage of restorative composites (2002) Oper Dent, 27, pp. 192-198 Alonso, R.C.B., Cunha, L.G., Correr, G.M., Association of photoactivation methods and low modulus liners on marginal adaptation of composite restorations (2004) Acta Odontol Scand, 62, pp. 298-304 Alonso, R.C.B., Sinhoreti, M.A.C., Consani, S., Sobrinho, L.C., Effect of resin liners on micro-leakage of class V dental composite restorations (2004) J Appl Oral Sci, 12, pp. 56-61 Estafan, D., Estafan, A., Leinfelder, K.F., Cavity wall adaptation of resin-based composites lined with flowable composites (2000) Am J Dent, 13, pp. 192-194 Vaidyanathan, J., Vaidyanathan, T.K., Flexural creep deformation and recovery in dental composites (2001) J Dent, 29, pp. 545-551 Ernst, C.P., Brand, N., Frommator, U., Reduction of polymerization shrinkage stress and marginal microleakage using soft-start polymerization (2003) J Esthet Restor Dent, 15, pp. 93-104 Sakaguchi, R.L., Berge, H.X., Reduced light energy density decreases post-gel contraction while maintaining the degree of conversion in composites (1998) J Dent, 26, pp. 695-700 Price, R.B., Rizkalla, A.S., Hall, G.C., Effect of soft-start exposure on the volumetric polymerization shrinkage and bulk modulus of dental composites and an unfilled resin (2000) Am J Dent, 13, pp. 176-180 Ernst, C.P., Kürschner, R., Rippin, G., Willershausen, B., Stress reduction in resin-based composites cured with a two-step light-curing unit (2000) Am J Dent, 13, pp. 69-72 Hofmann, N., Denner, W., Hugo, B., Klaiber, B., The influence of plasma arc vs. halogen standard or soft-start irradiation on polymerization shrinkage kinetics of polymer matrix composites (2003) J Dent, 31, pp. 383-393 Vandewalle, K.S., Ferracane, J.L., Hilton, T.J., Effect of energy density on properties and marginal integrity of posterior resin composite restorations (2004) Dent Mater, 20, pp. 96-106 Choi, K.K., Condon, J.R., Ferracane, J.L., The effects of adhesive thickness on polymerization contraction stress of composite (2000) J Dent Res, 79, pp. 812-817
