Resumen
Aim: To compare temporomandibular (TMD) subgroups classified according to the presence of localized pain (LP) or widespread pain (WP) in order to assess the quality of life domains and verify which components affect most the functional capacity of facial pain patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted and the Short Form-36 Health Survey was applied in order to assess quality of life. Thirty-nine TMD/WP patients, 37 TMD/LP patients and 40 subjects free of TMD complaints were evaluated. Results: TMD/WP patients differed significantly from healthy controls in all SF-36 components and TMD/LP patients ranked between them. It was also observed that patients with bodily pain and TMD with WP are respectively, 4.16 and 49.42 times more likely to have low functional capacity. Conclusions: Functional capacity in TMD subgroups was only affected by the presence of bodily pain and WP. These patients feature high chance of low functional capacity. Furthermore, TMD patients with localized and widespread pain share roleemotional impairments. 13 3 193 197 Pfau, D.B., Rolke, R., Nickel, R., Treede, R.D., Daublaender, M., Somatosensory profiles in subgroups of patients with myogenic temporomandibular disorders and fibromyalgia syndrome (2009) Pain, 147, pp. 72-83 Ohrbach, R., Fillingim, R.B., Mulkey, F., Gonzalez, Y., Gordon, S., Gremillion, H., Clinical findings and pain symptoms as potential risk factors for chronic TMD: Descriptive data and empirically identified domains from the OPPERA case-control study (2011) J Pain, 12, pp. T27-45 Smith, M.T., Wickwire, E.M., Grace, E.G., Edwards, R.R., Buenaver, L.F., Peterson, S., Sleep disorders and their association with laboratory pain sensitivity in temporomandibular joint disorder (2009) Sleep, 32, pp. 779-790 Slade, G.D., Smith, S.B., Zaykin, D.V., Tchivileva, I.E., Gibson, D.G., Yuryev, A., Facial pain with localized and widespread manifestations: Separate pathways of vulnerability (2013) Pain, 154, pp. 2335-2343 Williams, D.A., Clauw, D.J., Understanding fibromyalgia: Lessons from the broader pain research community (2009) J Pain, 10, pp. 777-791 Weissman-Fogel, I., Moayedi, M., Tenenbaum, H., Goldberg, M., Freeman, B., Davis, K., Abnormal cortical activity in patients with temporomandibular disorder evoked by cognitive and emotional tasks (2011) Pain, 152, pp. 384-396 Chen, H., Slade, G., Lim, P.F., Miller, V., Maixner, W., Diatchenko, L., Relationship between temporomandibular disorders, widespread palpation tenderness, and multiple pain conditions: A case-control study (2012) J Pain, 13, pp. 1016-1027 Fillingim, R.B., Ohrbach, R., Greenspan, J.D., Knott, C., Dubner, R., Bair, E., Potential psychosocial risk factors for chronic TMD: Descriptive data and empirically identified domains from the OPPERA case-control study (2011) J Pain, 12, pp. T46-60 Ware Jr., J.E., Sherbourne, C.D., The MOS 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36): I. conceptual framework and item selection (1992) Med Care, pp. 473-483 Rhudy, J.L., Meagher, M.W., The role of emotion in pain modulation (2001) Curr Opin Psychiatr, 14, pp. 241-245 Price, D.D., Psychological and neural mechanisms of the affective dimension of pain (2000) Science, 288, pp. 1769-1772 Dworkin, S.F., LeResche, L., Research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders: Review, criteria, examinations and specifications, critique (1992) J Craniomandib Disord, 6, pp. 301-355 Gonçalves, D.A., Dal Fabbro, A.L., Campos, J.A., Bigal, M.E., Speciali, J.G., Symptoms of temporomandibular disorders in the population: an epidemiological study (2010) J Orofac Pain, 24, pp. 270-278 LeResche, L., Drangsholt, M., Temporomandibular disorders (2013) Women and health, pp. 1367-1378. , In: Goldman MB, Troisi R, Rexrode KM, editors, 2.ed.
