Effect Of Bleaching Agents And Soft Drink On Titanium Surface Topography
Journal Of Biomedical Materials Research - Part B Applied Biomaterials. , v. 102, n. 1, p. 22 - 30, 2014.
The effects of carbamide peroxide, hydrogen peroxide and cola soft drink on the topographic modifications of commercially-pure titanium (CP-Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V were investigated. Ti discs were divided into 18 groups (n = 4) based on the solution treatment and Ti type. Specimens were immersed in 3 mL of each solution for 4 h per day (for the remaining 20 h, discs were left dry or immersed in artificial saliva) for 15 days. For control, specimens were immersed in only artificial saliva. Ti surfaces were examined using scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force (AFM) microscopes and their surface roughness (in μm) and surface chemical modifications were investigated. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Groups immersed in 35% hydrogen peroxide showed the highest roughness (Ra) (171.65 ± 4.04 for CP-Ti and 145.91 ± 14.71 for Ti-6Al-4V) (p < 0.05), followed by groups treated with carbamide peroxide 16% (110.91 ± 0.8 for CP-Ti and 49.28 ± 0.36 for Ti-6Al-4V) and 35% (65.67 ± 1.6 for CP-Ti and 53.87 ± 1.98 for Ti-6Al-4V); treatment with artificial saliva did not affect the results. These values were statistically superior to those observed prior to the treatment and to those of the control group (31.0 ± 0.99 for CP-Ti and 29.95 ± 0.58 for Ti-6Al-4V). Cola soft drink did not alter the surface roughness of either Ti type (p > 0.05). SEM and AFM revealed dramatic changes in the specimens surfaces immersed in the 35% hydrogen peroxide, mainly for CP-Ti. No detectable chemical modifications on the Ti surface were observed. Bleaching agents promoted significant changes in Ti topography, which could affect the longevity of implants treatments. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.10212230Branemark, P.I., Hansson, B.O., Adell, R., Breine, U., Lindstrom, J., Hallen, O., Ohman, A., Osseointegrated implants in the treatment of the edentulous jaw: Experience from a 10-year period (1977) Scand J Plast Reconstr Surg Suppl, 16, pp. 1-132Cortada, M., Giner, L., Costa, S., Gil, F.J., Rodriguez, D., Planell, J.A., Galvanic corrosion behavior of titanium implants coupled to dental alloys (2000) J Mater Sci Mater Med, 11, pp. 287-293Schiff, N., Grosgogeat, B., Lissac, M., Dalard, F., Influence of fluoride content and pH on the corrosion resistance of titanium and its alloys (2002) Biomaterials, 23, pp. 1995-2002Mabboux, F., Ponsonnet, L., Morrier, J.J., Jaffrezic, N., Barsotti, O., Surface free energy and bacterial retention to saliva-coated dental implant materials - An in vitro study (2004) Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces, 39, pp. 199-205Vieira, A.C., Ribeiro, A.R., Rocha, L.A., Celis, J.P., Influence of pH and corrosion inhibitors on the tribocorrosion of titanium in artificial saliva (2006) Wear, 261, pp. 994-1001Nikolopoulou, F., Saliva and dental implants (2006) Implant Dent, 15, pp. 372-376Correa, C.B., Pires, J.R., Fernandes-Filho, R.B., Sartori, R., Vaz, L.G., Fatigue and fluoride corrosion on Streptococcus mutans adherence to titanium-based implant/component surfaces (2009) J Prosthodont, 18, pp. 382-387Barao, V.A., Mathew, M.T., Assuncao, W.G., Yuan, J.C., Wimmer, M.A., Sukotjo, C., Stability of cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy for dental implants as a function of saliva pH - An electrochemical study (2012) Clin Oral Implants Res, 23, pp. 1055-1062Barao, V.A., Mathew, M.T., Assuncao, W.G., Yuan, J.C., Wimmer, M.A., Sukotjo, C., The role of lipopolysaccharide on the electrochemical behavior of titanium (2011) J Dent Res, 90, pp. 613-618Lazzara, R.J., Testori, T., Trisi, P., Porter, S.S., Weinstein, R.L., A human histologic analysis of osseotite and machined surfaces using implants with 2 opposing surfaces (1999) Int J Periodontics Restorative Dent, 19, pp. 117-129Chaturvedi, T.P., An overview of the corrosion aspect of dental implants (titanium and its alloys) (2009) Indian J Dent Res, 20, pp. 91-98Strietzel, R., Hosch, A., Kalbfleisch, H., Buch, D., In vitro corrosion of titanium (1998) Biomaterials, 19, pp. 1495-1499Horwitz, J., Machtei, E.E., Zuabi, O., Peled, M., Amine fluoride/stannous fluoride and chlorhexidine mouthwashes as adjuncts to single-stage dental implants: A comparative study (2005) J Periodontol, 76, pp. 334-340Zhou, Y.L., Niinomi, M., Akahori, T., Fukui, H., Toda, H., Corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of Ti-Ta alloys for biomedical applications (2005) Mater Sci Eng, 398, pp. 28-36Oliveira, N.T., Guastaldi, A.C., Electrochemical stability and corrosion resistance of Ti-Mo alloys for biomedical applications (2009) Acta Biomater, 5, pp. 399-405Mareci, D., Chelariu, R., Gordin, D.M., Ungureanu, G., Gloriant, T., Comparative corrosion study of Ti-Ta alloys for dental applications (2009) Acta Biomater, 5, pp. 3625-3639Mathew, M.T., Barao, V.A., Yuan, J.C., Assuncao, W.G., Sukotjo, C., Wimmer, M.A., What is the role of lipopolysaccharide on the tribocorrosive behavior of titanium?
