Resumen
Physalaemus centralis is widely distributed in areas of cerrado vegetation in South America. Here we describe the temporal variation in activity and explore eventual effects of climatic conditions on activity, calling sites, territorial behaviour; courtship behaviour, egg clutches and tadpole development of P. centralis in southeastern Brazil. Field observations were made from January 1996 to February 1997. Vocalisations and reproductive activity were restricted to the rainy season, with a peak of activity in October. The number of calling males was significantly correlated with relative humidity, mean air temperature, and air pressure values of the previous day. Courtship is simple and did not include any physical contact before amplexus; furthermore, females seem to choose their mates. Amplectant pairs were observed from mid-October to mid-December. Most foam nests observed were anchored within the vegetation. The number of eggs in the foam nests ranged from 1549 to 2405. Tadpoles were mainly found in shallow parts of the water from October to mid-January. The reproductive biology of P. centralis is similar to that of closely related species of the P. cuvieri group, suggesting conservatism in this lineage. © 2006 Taylor & Francis. 40 17-18 1199 1209 Barreto, L., Andrade, G.V., Aspects of the reproductive biology of Physalaemus cuvieri (Anura, Leptodactylidae) in northeastern Brazil (1995) Amphibia-Reptilia, 16, pp. 67-76 Bokermann, W.C.A., Observações biológicas sobre Physalaemus cuvieri Fitz, 1826 (Amphibia, Salientia) (1962) Revista Brasileira de Zoologia, 22, pp. 391-399 Bokermann, W.C.A., Sobre uma pequena coleção de anfíbios do Brasil central, com descrição de uma espécie nova de "Physalaemus" (1965) Revista Brasileira de Zoologia, 22, pp. 213-219 Brasileiro, C.A., Physalaemus centralis: Male-male combat (1998) Herpetological Review, 29, p. 165 Brasileiro, C.A., Sawaya, R.J., Kiefer, M.C., Martins, M., Amphibians of an open cerrado fragment in southeastern Brazil (2005) Biota Neotropica, 5, pp. 1-17 Cardoso, A.J., Biologia e sobrevivência de Physalaemus cuvieri Fitz., 1826 (Amphibia, Anura) na natureza (1981) Ciencia e Cultura, 33, pp. 1224-1228 Cardoso, A.J., Haddad, C.F.B., Diversidade e turno de vocalizações de anuros em comunidade neotropical (1992) Acta Zoologica Lilloana, 41, pp. 93-105 Crump, M.L., (1974) Reproductive Strategies in a Tropical Anuran Community, 61, pp. 1-68. , Miscellaneous Publication of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Kansas Davies, N.B., Halliday, T.R., Optimal mate selection in the toad Bufo bufo (1977) Nature, 269, pp. 56-58 Diaz-Paniagua, C., Tadpole distribution in relation to vegetal heterogeneity in temporary ponds (1987) Herpetological Journal, 1, pp. 167-169 Dillon, M.E., Fiaño, J., Oviposition site selection by the Tungara Frog (Physalaemus pustulosus) (2000) Copeia, 2000, pp. 883-885 Duellman, W.E., (1978) The Biology of An Equatorial Herpetofauna in Amazonian Ecuador, 65, pp. 1-352. , Miscellaneous Publication of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Kansas Fegraus, E.H., Marsh, D.M., Are newer ponds better?
