Resumen
This paper aims to identify variables associated with suicidal ideation during the previous 12 months in the city of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. Using a case-control design, risk factors for suicidal ideation were investigated through analysis of independent variables related to the individual, family, and health. Some 29 cases of suicidal ideation and 166 controls were interviewed. Cases were identified through a previous cross-sectional study, and controls were randomly selected from the same population base among those with no history of suicidal ideation in the previous 12 months. Regression models were used to control for confounders and effect modifiers. According to the results, demographic variables were not associated with suicidal ideation. In the final model, the variables that remained statistically significant were depressive symptoms, emotional difficulties, lack of neighborhood support, and less frequent church attendance. Suicidal ideation was consistently associated with factors related to depressive symptoms, especially lack of energy and depressed mood. 22 9 1835 1843 (2002) Multisite Intervention Study on Suicidal Behaviours SUPRE-MISS: Protocol of SUPRE-MISS, , Geneva: World Health Organization Botega, N.J., Barros, M.B.A., Oliveira, H.B., Dalgalarrondo, P., Marín-León, L., Suicidal behavior in the community: Prevalence and factors associated with suicidal ideation (2005) Rev Bras Psiquiatr, 27, pp. 45-53 Kessler, R.C., Borges, G., Walters, E.E., Prevalence of and risk factors for lifetime suicide attempts in the National Comorbidity Survey (1999) Arch Gen Psychiatry, 56, pp. 617-626 Fawcett, J., Clark, D.C., Bush, K.A., Assessing and treating the patient at risk for suicide (1993) Psychiatr Ann, 23, pp. 244-256 Suominen, K., Isometsä, E., Suokas, J., Haukka, J., Achte, K., Lönnqvist, J., Completed suicide after a suicide attempt: A 37-year follow-up study (2004) Am J Psychiatry, 161, pp. 563-564 Vilhjalmsson, R., Kristjansdottir, G., Sveinbjarnardottir, E., Factors associated with suicide ideation in adults (1998) Soc Psychiatry Psychiatr Epidemiol, 33, pp. 97-103 Pirkis, J., Burgess, P., Dunt, D., Suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among australian adults (2000) Crisis, 21, pp. 16-25 Kuo, W.H., Gallo, J.J., Tien, A.Y., Incidence of suicide ideation and attempts in adults: The 13-year follow-up of a community sample in Baltimore, Maryland (2001) Psychol Med, 31, pp. 1181-1191 Pirkis, J.E., Burgess, P.M., Meadows, G.N., Dunt, D.R., Suicidal ideation and suicide attempts as predictors of mental health service use (2001) Med J Aust, 175, pp. 542-545 Bruce, M.L., Ten Have, T.R., Reynolds III, C.F., Katz, I.I., Schulberg, H.C., Mulsant, B.H., Reducing suicidal ideation and depressive symptoms in depressed older primary care patients: A randomized controlled trial (2004) JAMA, 291, pp. 1081-1091 Gili-Planas, M., Rocca-Bennasar, M., Ferrer-Perez, V., Bernardo-Arroyo, M., Suicidal ideation, psychiatric disorder, and medical illness in a community epidemiological study (2001) Suicide Life Threat Behav, 31, pp. 207-213 Mari, J.J., Williams, P., A validity study of a psychiatric screening questionnaire (SRQ-20) in primary care in the city of Sao Paulo (1986) Br J Psychiatry, 148, pp. 23-26 Barbor, T.E., La Fuente, J.R., Saunders, J., Grant, M., (1992) AUDIT: The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test: Guidelines for Use in Primary Health Care, , Geneva: World Health Organization Iacoponi, E., Mari, J.J., Reliability and factor structure of the portuguese version of self-reporting questionnaire (1988) Int J Soc Psychiatry, 35, pp. 213-222 Beck, A.T., Kovacs, M., Weissmann, A., Assessment of suicide intention: The scale for suicide ideation (1979) J Consult Clin Psychol, 47, pp. 343-352 Sorenson, S.B., Rutter, C.M., Transgerational patterns of suicide attempt (1991) J Consult Clin Psychol, 59, pp. 861-866 Weissman, M.M., Bland, R.C., Canino, G.J., Greenwald, S., Hwu, H.G., Joyce, P.R., Prevalence of suicide ideation and suicide attempts in nine countries (1999) Psychol Med, 29, pp. 9-17 Renberg, E.S., Self-reported life-weariness, death-wishes, suicidal ideation, suicidal plans and suicide attempts in general population surveys in the north of Sweden 1986 and 1996 (2001) Soc Psychiatry Psychiatr Epidemiol, 36, pp. 429-436 Hovey, J.D., Religion and suicidal ideation in a sample of Latin American immigrants (1999) Psychol Rep, 85, pp. 171-177 Goldney, R.D., Fisher, L.J., Wilson, D.H., Dal Grande, E.F., Population attributable risk of major depression for suicidal ideation in a random and representative community sample (2003) J Affect Disord, 74, pp. 267-272 Lonnqvist, J.K., Psychiatric aspects of suicidal behavior: Depression (2000) The International Handbook of Suicide and Attempt Suicide, pp. 107-120. , Hawton K, van Heeringen K, editors.
