Resumen
This paper presents the work that is being done as a part of the project to develop a resistive current limiter using HTS Bi-2223/Ag tapes with the same construction scheme previously reported using LTS NbTi/CuNi wire with normal operating current of 170 A in liquid helium bath. The Bi-2223/Ag tape was helically wounded on several cylindrical G-10 tubes forming concentric coils connected in series, parallel or anti-parallel configurations in order to reduce the equivalent inductance of the complete winding. The design targets are the impedance of the electromagnetic system rising to 1.5 Ω during a fault occurrence in absence of inductance both in the normal state and in the superconducting state, rated voltage and current of 15 kV and 400 A, respectively, with maximum flux density of 0.1 T. The test results in low voltage (AC/DC) as well as magnetic field measurements at 77 K and 4.2 K are presented and the limiting performance of the system are also discussed. © 2004 Elsevier B.V.
