Several different structural morphologies may develop due to a wide range of the operational conditions during solidification of metals. In the literature has been reported that mechanical properties depend on solidification structures. It was also reported, in general, the corrosion behavior has been shown to depend strongly on the structural morphology and chemical composition. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the columnar and equiaxed structures upon the corrosion resistance varying the analyzed section surface. Thus, the columnar and equiaxed structure are represented by the transversal and longitudinal section, respectively. It was concluded that both commercially pure metals, Zn and Al, present very similar corrosion resistance as in the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as polarization tests. This results was different of previous paper which the investigation was realized in both purely equiaxed and columnar structures. It is evident that kinetic of the structural morphology formation affects upon the corrosion resistance. The solidification processing variables can be used to gain insight in both mechanical properties and corrosion performance of pure metals by using a preprogramming of the structural morphology formation.
