Resumen
Introduction: Visual loss represents an adversity for the affected person and society as a whole. As the world's population increases and as a greater proportion survives into late adulthood, the number of people with visual loss will inexorably rise. The control of blindness in children is a priority within any blindness prevention programme. Preventive measures have to be planned and established. Comments: The World Health Organization estimates on blindness and low vision are discussed and some strategies and planning of preventive programs are pointed out. Epidemiological and operational researches would contribute to health system needs, assessment and program management. Identifying social and cultural factors would better direct interventional efforts of blindness prevention. 67 4 597 601 Nizetic, B., Perspectives in ophthalmology- A public health point of view (1973) Can J Ophthamol, 8 (3), pp. 311-316 Resnikoff, S., National prevention of blindness programmes and Vision 2020 (2000) J Com Eye Hlth, 13 (1), pp. 49-50 West, S., Sommer, A., Prevention of blindness and priorities for the future (2001) Bull World Health Organ, 79 (3), pp. 244-248. , Commented on: Bull World Health Organ. 2002;80:419 Schwab, L., Eye care delivery in developing nations: Paradigms, paradoxes, and progress (1994) Ophthalmic Epidemiol, 1 (3), pp. 149-154 Thylefors, B., Négrel, A.D., Pararajasegaram, R., Dadzie, K.Y., Global data on blindness (1995) Bull World Health Organ, 73 (1), pp. 115-121 Resnikoff, S., Pararajasegaram, R., Blindness prevention programmes: Past, present, and future (2001) Bull World Health Organ, 79 (3), pp. 222-226 Thylefors, B., Resnikoff, S., (1998) Progress in the Control of World Blindness and Future Perspectives, 8 (2), pp. 140-143. , Santé Frick, K.D., Foster, A., The magnitude and cost of global blindness: An increasing problem that can be alleviated (2003) Am J Ophthalmol, 135 (4), pp. 471-476 Ho, V.H., Schwab, I.R., Social economic development in the prevention of global blindness (2001) Br J Ophthalmol, 85 (5), pp. 653-657 Kara-José, N., Arieta, C.E.L., South American programme: Brazil (2000) J Com Eye Hlth, 13 (1), pp. 55-56 (1997) Strategies for the Prevention of Blindness in National Programmes A Primary Healthy Care Approach, , World Health Organization. 2nd ed.
