Resumen
A study on the benefits of both conventional cooling modes (co and counter-current) to design a new fixed bed catalytic reactor using both conventional modes of refrigeration simultaneously (so that it is possible to take advantage of the positive features of each cooling mode) was carried out. As a case study, the catalytic oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde over Fe-Mo was considered. The best design was a system with a co-current flow at the first zone of the reactor, in relation to the feed, and counter-current flow from the reactor exit towards some region around the middle of the system. With the best design, in relation to the coolant arrangements, a parametric sensitive analysis was conducted o obtain the knowledge of the primary effect as well as the interaction of the operational parameters of the reactor. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 7th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (Glasgow, Scotland 7/10-14/2005).
