Resumen
To evaluate the retention and caries experience effects of three different materials used as fissure sealants after 24 months of clinical application: a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (A), a flowable resin composite (B) and a compomer (C). One hundred and seventeen (117) teeth were sealed with material A, 119 teeth with material B and 120 teeth with material C. Children were randomly assigned. Each one received only one of the materials studied. Plaque index, dmft score and socioeconomic level were scored at baseline. The clinical exams were conducted 6, 12 and 24 months after application of the sealant. Statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis) revealed that there were statistically significant differences between the retention rates of groups A and B and between groups B and C after 2 years, with material B showing better results. After 2 years, 3.1% of the teeth of group A, 4.3% of group B and 6.7% of group C were Carious+Filled. There was no evidence of association between canes presence after 2 years and plaque index, dmft score and socioeconomic level. These results suggest that flowable resin composite had a satisfactory retention after this period of evaluation and all three materials were effective on occlusal caries prevention. 29 2 133 137 Vrbic, V., Reasons for the caries decline in Slovenia (2000) Community Dent Oral Epidemiol, 28, pp. 126-132 Truin, G.J., Konig, K.G., Bronkhorst, E.M., Time trends in caries experience of 6- and 12-year-old children of different socioeconomic status in the Hague (1998) Caries Res, 32, pp. 1-4 Newbrun, E., Preventing dental decays: Current and prospective strategies (1992) J Am Dent Assoc, 123, pp. 68-73 Kaste, L.M., Selwitz, R.H., Oldakowski, R.J., Coronal caries in the primary and permanent dentition of children and adolescents 1-17 years of age: United States, 1988-1991 (1996) J Dent Res, 75, pp. 631-641 Meneghim, M.C., Saliba, N.A., Pereira, A.C., Importance of the first permanent molars in the determination of DMFT Index (1999) J Bras Odontopediatr Odontol Bebê, 2, pp. 37-41. , Portuguese Ripa, L.W., Sealants revised: An update of the effectiveness of pit and fissure sealants (1993) Caries Res, 27, pp. 77-82 Poulsen, S., Beiruti, N., Sadat, N., A comparison of retention and the effect on caries of fissure sealing with a glass-ionomer and a resin-based sealant (2001) Community Dent Oral Epidemiol, 29, pp. 298-301 Simonsen, R.J., Pit and fissure sealant: Review of the literature (2002) Pediatr Dent, 24, pp. 393-414 Boksman, L., Gratton, D.R., McCutcheon, E., Clinical evaluation of a glass ionomer cement as a fissure sealant (1987) Quintessence Int, 18, pp. 707-709 Mejäre, I., Mjör, I.A., Glass ionomer and resin-based fissure sealants: A clinical study (1990) Scand J Dent Res, 98, pp. 345-350 Forss, H., Halme, E., Retention of a glass ionomer cement and a resin-based fissure sealant and effect on carious outcome after 7 years (1998) Community Dent Oral Epidemiol, 26, pp. 21-25 Pereira, A.C., Basting, R.T., Pinelli, C., Retention and caries prevention of Vitremer® and Ketac-Bond®, used as occlusal sealants after 6 and 12 months (1999) Am J Dent, 12, pp. 62-64 Pereira, A.C., Pardi, V., Mialhe, F.L., Clinical evaluation of a polyacid-modified resin used as fissure sealant: A 48 month follow up (2000) Am J Dent, 13, pp. 294-296 Pardi, V., Pereira, A.C., Mialhe, F.L., A 5-year evaluation of two glass ionomer cements used as fissure sealants (2003) Community Dent Oral Epidemiol, 31, pp. 386-389 Winkler, M.M., Deschepper, E.J., Dean, J.A., Using a resin modified glass ionomer as an occlusal sealant: A one year clinical study (1996) J Am Dent Assoc, 127, pp. 1508-1514 Smales, R.J., Wong, K.C., 2-Year clinical performance of a resin-modified glass ionomer sealant (1999) Am J Dent, 12, pp. 59-61 (1984) Revista Mercado Global, pp. 41-84. , Portuguese Greene, J.C., Vermillion, J.R., The simplified oral hygiene index (1964) J Am Dent Assoc, 68, pp. 7-13 Thylstrup, A., Fejerskov, O., Características clínicas e patológicas da cárie dentária (1995) Cariologia Clínica. 2nd Ed., pp. 111-157. , Thylstrup A, Fejerskov O.
