The credit activity of ecclesiastic and charity institutions in Mexico City in the 18th Century

The article describes the credit practices developed by the nuns convents, the Juzgado de Capellanías y Obras Pías (Court of Chantries and Pious Works), the Real Fisco de la Inquisición (Royal Treasury of the Inquisition), the guilds, schools, hospitals, orphanages and shelters in Mexico City, in the 18th century. It refers to the borrowers that obtained the loans, the conditions that they had to meet, among them the guarantees they were supposed to provide, the credit mechanisms used for the transactions, such as consignative census and irregular deposits, the installments for the refund of the capital and the interests charged in the transactions. Lastly, it describes the areas in which these loans were normally applied, as well as the positive or negative effects that credit had on different productive branches and on family economics. El artículo describe las prácticas crediticias desarrolladas por los conventos de monjas, el Juzgado de Capellanías y Obras Pías, el Real Fisco de la Inquisición, las cofradías, los colegios, hospitales, orfanatos y recogimientos, en la ciudad de México, en el siglo XVIII. Se refiere a los prestatarios que obtuvieron los préstamos, a los requisitos que estos últimos debían cumplir, entre ellos las garantías que debían proporcionar a los mecanismos crediticios utilizados para las transacciones, tales como censos consignativos y los depósitos irregulares, a los plazos para la devolución de los capitales y los intereses que se cobraban en las transacciones. Finalmente, describe los rubros en los que mayoritariamente se aplicaron los préstamos, así como los efectos positivos o negativos que el crédito tuvo sobre diversas ramas productivas y sobre la economía familiar.
