Collaborative teaming: Adapting a task-based cycle into a unit Project
Tesis para optar al grado de Licenciado en Educación; Collaboration and effective communication are highly considered in this society. Schools have added these skills into their programmes, and English lessons seem to become a great opportunity to put them into practice, but there is a misunderstanding of how to include them in group works. For many years researchers have coincide in the importance of building rapport and a trust environment in the classroom. However, students have become quite competitive for reaching a mark and just focusing on the final outcome rather than acknowledging the importance of their process behaviours. This article works from the research question of how to build trust, respect and tolerance between students in a private school context to promote collaboration in high school levels. It also presents results of the implementation of a didactic unit in a Year 11 class from a Chilean private school. They were put in the challenge of creating an Escape Room, which is a popular game people play all over the world, and they formed teams to plan different actions and to assign several responsibilities towards a common goal; all of these lessons were implemented using a Task Based Learning Teaching (TBLT) approach as its principles cope with the article’s research. Results of the intervention showed that competition can be diminished when teachers promote collaboration and interdependence for solving problems in a project

Applying the Transtheoretical Model of Change to Personal Reading Habits in Middle School Students
Tesis para optar al grado de Licenciado en Educación; This study aimed to implement a pedagogical unit based on the transtheoretical model of change in order to promote the development of personal reading habits among students. Using a literature-based approach, 7th grade students were assigned a reading text: Holes, by Louis Sachar. Students were expected to do at least 15 minutes of personal reading time in class at the beginning of every class. Accompanying this, they were assigned a variety of tasks, many of which were writing tasks. These were designed to promote improved reading comprehension skills and raise awareness of individual’s contexts related to personal reading habits. The findings of this study suggest that while the majority of the students feel they are able to read and understand what they read, they do not spend any or much personal time reading literature. The conclusions open up new areas for more rigorous application of the program over a greater period of time and taking into account a wider degree of personal / group characteristics

Increasing English Class Participation through Extrinsic Motivation

Increasing English Class Participation through Extrinsic Motivation
Tesis para optar al grado de Licenciada en Educación; The present article proposes the Extrinsic Motivation as a means to improve participation during the English classroom to develop interaction, communication and the use of the language. The extrinsic motivation is intended to be promoted through the integration of homework assignments that would generate an additional grade that would benefit their current low academic performance. The plan is to promote also collaborative learning between students inside the classroom, so as to increase participation. Besides, communicative approach and student- centred classroom are included. This article shows the implementation of a didactic unit in a 9th grade class from a subsidized school located in Quinta Normal, Santiago, which presents a 70% of social vulnerability and in which English subject is not given special importance. The class group is quite disruptive and students show neither interest nor motivation to participate in the English class. The following questions will be studied and presented in this article: would homework activities increase the English language use in classes of EFL in a vulnerable high school? Would these homework activities work as extrinsic motivator to increase English Class Participation? The results obtained in this intervention showed that it is difficult to improve participation in a disruptive class and that just a few students were able to increase their class involvement and disposition concerning working with others. There was no significant increase in the use of the language
