Resumen
The Multi-scale Governance for Biodiversity Conservation approach (MGBC) is a theoretical and
practical perspective that seeks to integrate theories of collective action and social capital with
studies of conservation biology. Using a MGBC approach this thesis examines the emergence of an
inter-community indigenous organization in Oaxaca, Mexico and their collective action institution:
the Natural Resource Committee of the Upper Chinantla ( Comite de Recursos Naturales de La
Chinantla Alta A.C; CORENCHI). Through research with primary document sources and the
application of semi-structured interviews a case study was produced which shows that CORENCHI
member communities have had a history of inter-community organizations formed for the
marketing of coffee. The subsequent rise and organizational structure of CORENCHI was the result
of a historical process of creation of trust between these communities and external stakeholders
interested in conservation. As part of the formation, the communities established new institutions at
an inter-community scale for the conservation of natural resources. These institutions include
community land use zoning, comunal estatutes, and community conservation areas.
