Resumen
Introduction: Obesity is considered one of the most serious public health problems, affecting all social classes and different age groups. Besides the fact of the distribution of body fat being associated with the emergence of other metabolic disorders, there is strong evidence of the emergence of locomotion problems related to increased fat mass. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between abdominal adiposity and postural balance in subjects with metabolic syndrome. Methodology: Twenty-six subjects (8 men and 18 women) with metabolic syndrome were evaluated. For the postural control data collection, a force plate was used, from which the data were correlated with measures of waist circumference. Data were analyzed with SPSS 14.0 software using the Shapiro - Wilk test to verify the normality then the Pearson correlation coefficient to analyze the correlation, considering a significance level of 5%. Results: It was possible to see a positive correlation between the variables anteroposterior oscillation, scroll area and oscillation velocity, and waist circumference in the conditions tested, with eyes open and closed, in individuals with metabolic syndrome. Conclusion: These results reveal an increase in body oscillation with increased waist circumference and hence, a greater risk of more unstable situations with the possibility of falls.
