Resumen
Introduction: Bronchiolitis is the most common viral infection respiratory tract in
children under 2 years. In Colombia there are few studies on this topic. This is the
reason that motivates our study to assess the current situation of the Colombian
population.
Objective: Characterize the hospitalized population diagnosed with bronchiolitis in
Clínica Infantil Colsubsidio
Materials and Methods: Is a descriptive and retrospective study where characteristic
demographic, clinical, paraclinical and treatment were reviewed in the medical
records of patients hospitalized with bronchiolitis in Clínica Infantil Colsubsidio
Results: 1230 stories were assessed, 906 met inclusion criteria. 55.7% were children.
The mean age was 5.5 months. The main risk factor was being preterm (57%). The
main isolated bacteria were respiratory syncytial virus, followed by adenovirus. We
show that the drug most commonly used was salbutamol in 98%. 25% antibiotics
were administered, because of suspected bacterial coinfection. The 65.78% had a
hospital stay less than 5 days and 3.64% required admission to the intensive care unit.
Mortality was 0%.
Conclusion: The demographic characteristics of our population, the behavior of the
disease, requirement of ICU and hospital stay are similar to those described in the
literature. Findings indicate a large number of diagnostic aids and medication use,
which requires that we rethink the management and adhere to current evidence.
