Resumen
Objective: The study aimed to determine the behavioral change stages in relation to alcohol, tobacco and drug consumption in students aged 9 to 17 years in Bogota-Colombia, who were part of the FUPRECOL study. Method: This was a cross-sectional study involving 6, 965 children and adolescents between 9 and 17 years old from 24 official educative institutions from Bogotá, Colombia. The Behavior Change Questionnaire regarding intention to consume drugs, tobacco or alcohol was self-administered. Results: Response rate was 92, 3% with 6. 965 registers considered as valid, where 58, 4% were women with a mean age of 12, 74± 2. 38 years. In the general population, in terms of drug consumption, 6% of students were in a pre-contemplation stage, 44% in contemplative, 30% in preparation and 20% in maintenance. Regarding alcohol consumption, 5% of children and adolescents were in a stage of pre-contemplation, 36% in contemplation, 12% in preparation/action, 46% in maintenance. Respecting tobacco consumption, 4% of children and adolescents were in the pre-contemplation stage, 33% in contemplation, 12% in preparation/action and 51% in maintenance. Conclusions: The students in Bogota-Colombia are mostly in a maintenance stage regarding the intention to consume tobacco and alcohol. Regarding drug consumption, children and adolescents were in the contemplation stage. Greater efforts are required to encourage preventive programs that teach the health risks related to psychoactive substance’s abuse or dependency, giving this subject priority in the public policies and agendas within the school sphere.
