Resumen
This thesis seeks to evaluate the relationship between the institutional order of the Colombian state and the logic behind the territorial control of paramilitary groups in the region of Urabá Antioqueño during the period 1997-2007. The thesis explains and analyzes how paramilitary groups took advantage of the context of institutional weakness to consolidate para-state structures that instrumentalized and coopted the institutions of the state in order to maintain the ideal conditions for their presence; as well as the consequences over regional Institutions as a result of the consolidation of an authoritarian and clientilistic political control, the interference in the state´s monopoly of violence, and the protection of a particular economic model based on violence. To this purpose, as general parameters, this thesis looks at the state functions described by Charles Tilly, the descriptions of states within states brought forth by Paul Kinsgton and Ian Spears, and Jorge Garay´s theory of state cooptation.
