Resumen
The purpose of this paper is to describe and compare the differences in emotional competencies for children attending and not attending toy libraries. This study is part of a quantitative study with a descriptive-comparative non-experimental design. For this study a sample of 540 Colombian children was taken, of whom 249 were boys and 287 were girls. A "Guide Instrument", which was divided into two observation grids, one for a natural situation and the other for an artificial situation, was used. The results indicated significant differences for the expression of emotions and empathy components, but no significant differences for the self-regulation component. Overall, this would demonstrate that indeed the toy libraries do have an effect on emotional competencies, more specifically on the expression of emotions and empathy. This could occur because these two components could be developed through early social interactions and social play. By contrast, the development of self-regulation depends more on personal and family background factors such as the child’s temperament and the mother-child relationship. Finally, additional studies will be required to provide further evidence on the relationship between emotional competencies and toy libraries, and thus, have both toy libraries and emotional competencies be considered as key factors in the development of children
