Recorre-se também a periódicos e outros impressos coetâneos a fim de investigar a condição de publicação e a recepção da obra balzaquiana Abstract: This research intends to examine in which ways the portrayal of the writer in Lost Illusions contributes to the understanding of the situation of the literature and of the society at the beginning of the 19th century, starting from the dichotomy, stablished by Balzac, between Daniel D¿Arthez¿s Cénacle and journalism. In order to accomplish that, it is necessary to present an overview of the men of letters¿ status and mobilize the concept of "genius", which, associated to melancholy and misunderstanding of the contemporaries, woks as sanction and legitimation for the writer. This sacre aura, recommended by the romantic imaginary, as affirmed by Bénichou (1973), conflicts with the rise of the "industrial literature" (SAINTE-BEUVE, 1839), the feuilletons, linked to the bourgeois logic and to journalism, firmly criticized by Balzac. That conflict culminates in a mutual influence between the literary and the journalistic fields (THÉRENTY, 2007), which remain, for a long while, intertwined ¿ in the character of the writer (who works for both) and in the writing style. It is also scope of this paper to question the other oppositions on which the novel is based, so to discuss approximations and meanings for the historical moment represented: bourgeoisie and bohemia, classicism and romanticism, capital and province, literature as a mission and as an occupation. It is expected to emphasize the confluency of those concepts in the emergency of a capitalist society, in which all individuals find themselves inexorably related by the production process that moves it. The accessory analysis of other stories from the Human comedy that portray the writer allows a more comprehensive apprehension on the theme of the literary career attraction in Balzac¿s narratives, author whose activism in the settlement of copyright and in the gathering of a writers¿ society is remarkable. Newspapers and other contemporary articles are also consulted in order to explore the publishing conditions and the reception of the balzacien masterpiece Mestrado Historia e Historiografia Literaria Mestra em Teoria e História Literária CAPES
